(Springfield, MA) The first batch of COVID-19 vaccines will arrive in Western Massachusetts today. Baystate Health President Dr. Mark Keroack says the first shots will be administered on Wednesday. The first doses will go to the most vulnerable populations. Phase 1 includes healthcare workers and the elderly living in nursing homes. Phase 2 is expected to start in February. Teachers and those over 65 will get those shots. Phase 3 includes the general public and will likely begin in April.

Quabbin Valley Healthcare Assistant Administrator Michael Kachadoorian said early measures to combat COVID-19 when it arrived in March paid off for the nursing home on Daniel Shays Highway in Athol, but it hasn’t been so lucky this time around.
