Keys man got busted for illegal fishing in the Bahamas Now, he s giving them a new boat

May 8—Henry Danzig is described by friends as a beloved member of the Tavernier community who often left bags full of fresh fish in a fridge in the back of his house for anyone in need. He also cooked inexpensive fish dishes at a small diner he co-owns with a friend. But the recreational angler and Morgan Stanley financial advisor may have been illegally catching some of that fish in the Bahamas, according to court documents. He got busted by the U.S. Coast Guard in May last year with more than 500 pounds of reef fish when returning to the Keys from Cal Sal Bank in the Bahamas, the documents showed. The fact that he sold some of the fish at his restaurant was the basis for the charge that he harvested the fish for commercial gain, according to the documents.

Fisherman gives boat to Bahamas in criminal sentencing

Islamorada recreational fisherman and restaurant owner Henry Danzig has purchased a roughly $200,000 new boat for the Bahama military as part of a plea agreement for illegally fishing that country’s waters in May 2020. Danzig, who is part owner of the City Hall Cafe in Islamorada, was caught by the U.S. Coast Guard on his way back to Islamorada from illegally fishing a remote area of the Bahamas called Cay Sal Bank. Keys anglers fishing around Cay Sal Bank is not uncommon. Danzig had to purchase a 2021 30-foot Contender center-console vessel with twin 250 horsepower engines as part of his plea agreement. The vessel will be used by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force for law enforcement purposes such as patrols for looking people violating fishing rules.
