Residents of Barangay Cuayan in Angeles City, Philippines, turn over a rescued Philippine pangolin to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The DENR said the city government, together with the barangay council of Cuayan, turned over the endangered pangolin, which was found in a vacant lot before being rescued by residents. The DENR is now looking into the health of the pangolin and will transfer it to a wildlife rescue center for rehabilitation before releasing it into its natural habitat. Philippine pangolins are endemic to four islands in the Philippines and are among the most illegally trafficked wildlife in the world, with their scales sought after in certain concoctions, despite having no proven medicinal value.
