O’Brien cited rules in the Rajya Sabha to back his demand that all other business of the House be suspended for a discussion on Manipur. Citing words included in a list of unparliamentary words in Lok Sabha last year, O’Brien said it was an attempt to muzzle the Opposition.
Police sources told The Indian Express no arrest has been made in this case so far. Director General of Police Rajiv Singh did not comment on the status of the investigation. Superintendent of Police, Imphal East, Shivakanta did not respond to calls and messages.
Dipankar Bhattacharya, national general secretary, CPI(ML) Liberation, said, “. Centre and State (Manipur) have BJP governments. They have knowledge of what is happening, but haven’t been able to restore peace.”
The Manipur government has imposed a full curfew for a day and removed the daily curfew relaxation from 5 am to 6 pm in the five valley districts in view of a protest rally on Wednesday. The Kwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace, which represents women in the main market of Imphal town, has appealed to all mothers to raise slogans during the "Mothers Protest" rally from 11 am to 1 pm, demanding the rejection of separate administration, implementation of NRC, and immediate assembly session convening to support the protest against ongoing violence in the state.
A three-judge Bench presided by CJI D Y Chandrachud allowed the state government to approach the HC in case there were difficulties in implementing its direction.
