On days when the slow approach of a tropical thunderstorm turned the sky black and drained the Waitākere ranges of colour, I dreaded heading out to the Roseridge rest home in Henderson. It was deathly weather and it trapped the residents inside as surely as lockdown. They were housebound, feeble. Old age is a slope of decline and fall – the physical indignities, the mind wandering into some lunar wasteland. A visit on days like that seemed a bleak and cheerless way to spend my time but in fact every time I visited Roseridge in the summer of 2020-21, I left on a high, as though I had emerged from some strange and magical kingdom.

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) is now accepting applications or recommendations to the post of Chief Justice and head of the country’s judiciary, which will be vacant on March 27 with the early retirement of Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta, until February 15.
In an announcement made by the JBC and published in the Manila Bulletin, also open for applications or nominations is the post of Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao Rodolfo M. Elman whose term of office will end on March 13.
For the Deputy Ombudsman’s post, the deadline for applications or recommendations is on March 1.
The JBC is the constitutional office that accepts, screens, and nominates appointments to the judiciary, the Ombudsman, and deputy Ombudsman, among other offices.

There are people who retire, only to come out of retirement in a few months or years. When asked for the reason, some will say they got bored or they miss the challenge. Unfortunately, a good number will say the reason is financial in nature. Yet, not all will have the luxury of having access to a job anytime he or she wants that is why we really need to prepare for our retirement.
Preparing for retirement is no easy task, and I would say it is more of an art rather than a science. What will work for one person might not necessarily be true for another.
