Eid holidaymakers returning to Dhaka from southern districts

After celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr at their village homes, people have started returning to Dhaka from 21 southern districts through Paturia-Daulatdia and Aricha-Kazirhat routes.
Bhasha Shahid Barkat ferry with over 300 passengers, 30 private cars, six microbuses and 20 motorcycles left Rajbari s Daulatdia ghat in the morning and anchored at pontoon-4 of Manikganj s Paturia ghat around 9:30am.
Another ferry, Shah Jalal, anchored at Paturia ghat around 9:15am with over 300 passengers, 200 motorcycles and a number of small vehicles.
Several other ferries carrying passengers and vehicles started to anchor at the ghat one after another with 10 to 15 minutes gap.

A truck driver was killed when his vehicle plunged into the Padma river after he lost control while trying to drive onto a ferry at Manikganj s Paturia terminal last night.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately, said Abdus Salam, manager (commerce) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), Aricha.

Ferry services along the Daulatdia-Paturia and Shimulia-Banglabazar routes have resumed around 10 am Monday after heavy fog on the Padma river disrupted operations. );

Manikganj s Paturia and Rajbari s Daulatdia waterways were closed from midnight to 10 am Monday, while ferry crossings between Munshiganj’s Shimulia and Madaripur’s Banglabazar remained shut from 5:30 am 10:30 am.
Thousands of vehicles were stranded at the four dockyards on both sides of the river leaving passengers and vehicle workers stuck in the cold.
Fog in the Padma basin began to increase after 10 pm on Sunday, said Zillur Rahman, deputy general manager (commerce) of BIWTC s Aricha office. The visibility came down to near-zero at midnight, forcing the ferry operators to suspend services.
