A thirdparty contractor working on streetlights for the city of san jose apparently hit a sixinch steel gas main. They had been using some sort of excavating equipment at the time. The Fire Department evacuated people within a threeblock radius. Complicating matters, there was a second rupture of a sewer line. In this case a thirdparty contractor did not only hit a gas line, he also struck a sear line. Gas did travel into the sewer system following standard safety practice crews are lifting Manhole Covers to ensure that the gas can escape and quickly dissipate into the air.
