A person is in critical condition following a crash south of New Plymouth. Emergency services were called to the car and motorcycle crash at the intersection of Junction Rd and Plantation Rd on State Highway 3 about 11.15am on Saturday. A St John media spokesperson said one person was in a critical condition and another was in a serious condition. They were transported to Taranaki Base Hospital by ambulance, she said. The intersection leads into the popular Lake Mangamahoe Mountain Bike Park. One lane was blocked and northbound traffic was diverted down Egmont Rd.

As the popularity of mountain biking surges New Plymouth health professionals are warning young riders to take head knocks seriously and get checked by a doctor before getting back on their bike. In Taranaki much of the growth in mountain biking has come via the New Plymouth Mountain Bikers Club, which has gone from 250 members five years ago to just under 1400 now. But as the number of kids engaging in the sport at places like Lake Mangamahoe goes up, so does the number of concussions.
