THE family of a much-loved Widnes rugby player, who died earlier this year after contracting Covid-19, have been fundraising for charity in his memory. James Brian Gill played rugby union for Halton RUFC before joining Widnes RUFC in the 1990s, where he represented the first and second teams. He went on to become the driving force behind the revival of the veterans team and also played rugby league for Widnes St Marie’s RLFC. Brian was treated in Whiston Hospital’s intensive care unit after testing positive for coronavirus where he sadly passed in February. Former captain Andy O’Neill launched a fundraising appeal in Brian’s honour, which featured a campaign encouraging friends and family to take pictures of themselves running, walking or cycling 5km, as Covid-19 restrictions prevented them having a proper gathering after the funeral.

Only Your Boss Can Cure Your Burnout
People refer to various forms of malaise as “burnout,” but it’s technically a work problem. And only your employer can solve it.

In the early 1970s, a psychoanalyst named Herbert J. Freudenberger opened a free clinic to treat poor patients in New York City. It was a bit of a passion project: Freudenberger would work 10 to 12 hours during the day in his private practice, then head over to the free clinic to work until midnight or later. He seemed to realize that he was overcommitting. “You start your second job when most people go home,” Freudenberger wrote at one point. “And you put a great deal of yourself in the work.”

Edna O Brien.
Celebrated, controversial, talented, a national icon. All or any of these would describe one of Ireland’s foremost ladies of literature, Edna O’Brien. Recently, to celebrate her 90th birthday, a diptych portrait by photographer Mandy O’Neill was unveiled at the National Gallery of Ireland.
The commission, by the 2018 Zurich Portrait Prize winner O’Neill, has been added to the national portrait collection and is a most worthy inclusion. O’Neill’s commission followed her success in the competition with the evocative Diane, Larkin Community College.
