Vivian Harvey, 81, goes to Guatemala every winter, where she spends five months tutoring children. And for 11 years, she has brought her dachshund, Sadie, along for the trip.
E47 is just one example among a global constellation of state-affiliated internet censor squads both in Vietnam and around the world, but Facebookâs failure to stand up to the group should worry dissidents regardless of nationality, particularly those who might have bought into the companyâs promises in the past. In an October 2019 op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared that âFacebook stands for free expressionâ and that âin a democracy, a private company shouldnât have the power to censor politicians or the news.â COO Sheryl Sandberg testified under oath before Congress that the company âwould only operate in a country when we can do so in keeping with our values.â But an investigation by The Intercept shows that this public veneration of free expression exists in a different universe from the companyâs behind-the-scenes practices.
seriously. these agents are not happy to hear about these allegations. again, the overwhelming number of these agents, they do their job every day. the american people know that they do their job every day. professionally and through standard of excellence. so it s tough. but we ll get past it. okay. you have no qualms about that? you think we re going to be back to top dog, soon? i think the secret service has been back to top dog, it never ends. this is what they do every day is too serious for them to dwell on the allegations. respond to it? yes, minimize it? yes, but move on. andy o connell, thank you very much for your time. if you find your newspaper s coverage on washington a bit lacking perhaps it was because the press corps was at the white house correspondents dinner. the president took jabs at newt gingrich, mitt romney and more. i had a lot more material prepared, but i had to get the secret service home in time for their new curfew.
more now on the developing she secret service scandal. three more agency employees have been ousted bringing the total to six. the investigation is ongoing. we ll get perspective on the secret service from a man who is on the inside. andrew o connell, former secret service agent. andy, good morning. good morning, alex. let s talk about really what goes on here. what are the duties of advanced teams in the secret service, particularly when scouting foreign locations for the president? well, before the president travels anywhere, whether it is in the united states or overseas, the advance teams go out, the white house staff advance team goes out to figure out what the president is going to be doing, the schedule, where he s going to be going, who he is talking to. the secret service advance teams go out to design security, so they get there ahead of time, sometimes weeks and days, it really depends on the country or city to which they are going and the threat or risk assessment.
