Peak travel bookings shift from August to October amid holiday warnings

Peak travel bookings shift from August to October amid holiday warnings Simon Calder © Provided by The Independent With government ministers in London and Edinburgh warning prospective holidaymakers against booking any trips for the summer, there has been a distinct shift in peak bookings from the usual month, August, to October. Sales data provided to The Independent by TravelSupermarket shows that in the week beginning 11 January, the normal sales pattern prevailed: with peaks at Easter, the late May bank holiday week and August, with a small spike for the October half term. But a week later the pattern had changed comprehensively. Easter sales have almost collapsed. While there is still an appetite for late May holidays, August actually shows a dip – with the strongest sales for the entire year ahead being in October 2021.

World first as miniature stallion Duncan gets full hip replacement

Horse & Hound Trending: A miniature horse called Duncan has made an “excellent” recovery from what is believed to be the first successful equine total hip replacement. The 85kg stallion spent three weeks in the Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital, at the University of Liverpool, this summer, but at his most recent check, was walking and trotting “almost normally”. A spokesman for the university said Duncan came into the clinic in July with severe hind-limb lameness. A CT scan showed he had dislocated his left hip, and sustained “irreparable” damage to the joint. “Treatment options for this problem are very limited, especially with extensive damage to the head of the femur,” said equine surgical specialist Dave Stack.

Duncan was first admitted to the Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital at the University of Liverpool in July this year for investigation of severe hind limb lameness. A CT scan confirmed fears that Duncan had dislocated the left hip joint and damaged it irreparably. Equine surgical specialist Dave Stack said treatment options for such a problem were very limited, especially with extensive damage to the head of the femur. “I discussed Duncan’s predicament with two small animal surgical specialists, Professor Rob Pettitt and Andy Tomlinson, who agreed that performing a total hip replacement offered Duncan the best chance for recovery.”
