Jo-Ann Gustafson of Jaffrey knows there are people out there who need more help than her family does.
The last time Gustafson used a food pantry was before the COVID-19 pandemic began. But by mid-February, she found herself in a situation where she felt the need to ask for help.
Both Gustafson and her granddaughter, who she and her husband are raising, contracted COVID-19 and were forced to quarantine for two weeks.
“It’s been a rough road,” Gustafson said. So she connected with Mandy Carter, Community Resource Specialist/Kinship Navigator at The River Center. Carter began delivering food to the Gustafsons from the Community Meals To Go program on Tuesday and Thursday nights and as Gustafson put it, “it made a huge impact.”

As parents of children with special needs, Jillian Mercier and Mandy Carter both know that it can be hard for other parents to relate to their struggles. They’re hoping the new parenting group they re facilitating, called “See the ABLE not the Label,” will cultivate a much-needed social network among local parents of children with disabilities. The monthly group is hosted by The River Center.
Four of Mercier’s five children have special needs including mental health issues, and medical issues like cerebral palsy, and Carter, a Kinship Navigator and Community Resources Specialist for The River Center, has a son who has high functioning autism, ADHD, and anxiety disorders.

By Mandy Carter–
I wonder how many of us could ever have thought that we would have our first-ever woman, and woman of color, as our vice-president? I sure didn’t at first.
That was until I remembered having had the good fortune of working on the historic election of our first-ever Black president, Barack Obama, in his 2008 presidential election campaign.
As an out Black lesbian and lifelong Democrat, I count myself fortunate to have worked on two winning historic campaigns that proactively engaged our LGBTQ+ communities. In 2008, soon-to-be President Obama formed Obama Pride with five national co-chairs for his national LGBT leadership team. They included myself of Durham, NC; Marsha Botzer of Seattle, WA; Jesse Garcia of Dallas, TX; Campbell Spencer of Washington, DC; and Eric Stern of Berkeley, CA.
