Cleveland s Roberto Perez reportedly out 8-10 weeks after finger surgery By Zac Wassink | Last updated 5/7/21
Cleveland Indians catcher Roberto Perez fractured his right ring finger while attempting to retrieve a pitch delivered by reliever James Karinchak in mid-April but attempted to play through the injury. That might not have been the best option.
According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN) and Paul Hoynes of cleveland.com, Perez underwent surgery Friday morning to repair the issue and is slated to miss around eight to 10 weeks of action. Manager Terry Francona didn t have the exact timeframe when speaking with reporters ahead of Friday s home game against the Cincinnati Reds but said Perez would be out months instead of weeks.

There probably aren’t many times in his life when Franmil Reyes has snuck up on someone. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Reyes looks like he could stiff arm a Ford F-150. There’s nothing inconspicuous about him. However, despite being fourth in average exit velocity since he was called up in 2018 – rubbing elbows with the Aaron Judge-s, Nelson Cruz-s, and Joey Gallo-s of the world – Reyes’ name is rarely mentioned when discussing the game’s prodigious power hitters. Part of this may be because he’s played in Cleveland and a pre-Fernando Tatis Jr. San Diego. Part of it may be because, despite the jumbo exit velocity, he’s tied for 21st in home runs over that span. You can hit the ball as hard as you want, but if 46.6% of them are on the ground like Reyes’ have been, people will lose interest as quickly as those blistering grounders become outs.

One of the potential feel-good stories of this spring in Cubs camp was the re-signing of Pedro Strop to a minor-league contract. Strop appeared healthy, and if he could get back some of the velocity he appeared to have lost in 2019 and 2020, he could help out the 2021 Cubs bullpen.
That will now be put on hold:
Strop being held out of camp for violating COVID-19 protocols. Unclear when he ll be allowed to return. Must quarantine (possibly a week or more) Gordon Wittenmyer (@GDubCub) March 7, 2021
Remember last year when Cleveland Indians pitchers Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac flouted the COVID-19 health and safety protocols by going out when they were in Chicago? It was a whole big thing, and even led to them getting sent out to the team’s alternate site. If there is any organization in baseball where you wouldn’t NOW expect players to break the rules, it might be Cleveland.
Except, welp:
Jose Ramirez also found to have violated coronavirus health and safety protocol he was with Franmil Reyes and so Ramirez and Reyes will be kept away from the others in the Indians sphere for a few days.
