New Greater Manchester Covid Vaccination Centre at Etihad Campus opens Date published: 12 January 2021 The large-scale vaccination centres are opening in addition to the local community vaccination centres The first patients to be vaccinated at the new Greater Manchester NHS Vaccination Centre have spoken of their “relief” to be getting their Covid-19 jab. The facility opened its doors yesterday morning (11 January) at the Manchester Tennis and Football Club at the Etihad Campus. It is one of seven large-scale vaccination sites across the country with the ability to deliver thousands of the vaccines every week as part of the national vaccination programme.

Event venues across the UK have been transformed into vaccination centres as the UK continues to push ahead with its inoculation programme. Despite being largely forgotten by the Government during the Covid-19 pandemic, the events industry has proved its value to the nation. While high-profile venues such as ExCeL London and Epsom Racecourse have been largely converted to handle thousands of people each day, more than one hundred other event venues have also joined the national effort. However, despite the Government saying it plans to vaccinate 200,000 per day, it remains unclear for how long many of these venues have been contracted as vaccination centres.

Queues formed outside the sites early on Monday morning as nurses prepared to vaccinate thousands at socially distanced tables or cubicles. Moira Edwards, 88, became the first person to receive the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab at Epsom racecourse in Surrey at around 8.15am. Ms Edwards, from Cobham in Surrey, who received her first dose beside her daughter Clare Edwards, said it was “extremely important” to get the vaccine.She said: “I had no hesitation at coming forward for my vaccination when it was offered to me. I have quite a large family, who all live near me, and feel it is extremely important to protect myself and them.

They started delivering vaccines in December, and while they will still do so in the future, the new centres are purpose-built for the rollout. The centres should also allow health workers to quickly vaccinate most people in the UK, preferably by late this year.
