We ve had nothing but slaps in the face : Experienced Manatee County teachers feel disrespected by salary increases

Manatee County is working to increase salary for all teachers, but the recent increase mostly benefits newcomers. Author: Lia Fernandez (WTSP) Updated: 6:27 PM EST January 27, 2021 MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. Manatee County s school board recently approved salary increases for teachers in the 2020-2021 school year, but long-time educators are calling the decision a slap in the face.  $8.4 million was allocated for the pay raises, according to Pat Barber, president of the Manatee Education Association. Of that money, 80 percent was earmarked to increase the pay of teachers who were making under $47,500. The remaining 20 percent could be used for anyone else. In Manatee County, the approved increases will raise the pay for a new teacher to $51,630, which is a $5,000 increase.

The School District of Manatee County could have a leg up on the competition when it comes to recruiting first-year teachers. Superintendent Cynthia Saunders said the district’s new starting salary of $51,630 could be the highest in the state. “It will help to attract and keep personnel here, especially if we’re the highest in the region, because we all know you can live in many counties here and commute to one another,” Saunders said. “It will put us at an advantage in attracting [teachers] to make sure we have all of our positions filled next year.” The School Board of Manatee County on Jan. 12 approved the contract with the Manatee Education Association that included salary increases to bump a starting teacher’s salary from $45,706 to $51,630.
