U S 41 Reopens Near Piney Point; Officials Optimistic Additional Pumps Could Stave Off Potential Br

Originally published on April 6, 2021 3:52 pm An evacuation order that was issued near the site of the Piney Point processing plant in Manatee has been lifted as officials expressed optimism the reservoir will not breach. In a tweet Tuesday afternoon, Manatee County officials say data shows diminished risk for outlying areas. Earlier Tuesday, U.S. 41 reopened, days after it was shut down as part of the evacuation. The reopening and lifting of the evacuation came ahead of optimism from county officials that the leaking processing plant will avoid a major breach that would send millions of gallons of water into the surrounding community, as was feared earlier this week.

Potential second breach discovered at Piney Point phosphate plant

Engineers see no evidence of potential second breach at Piney Point, says FDEP Piney Point 4-4-21 By ABC7 Staff | April 5, 2021 at 12:40 PM EDT - Updated April 5 at 8:31 PM MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) - Following an announcement at an earlier news conference stating that a potential second breach had been located in the gypsum stacks at Piney Point, a deeper look from engineers show those fears were unfounded. Public Safety Director Jacob Saur said the Army Corps of Engineers are on scene assessing the damage by drone. Twenty-six pumps and 10 vacuum trucks have been brought on-site and they’re all expected to be put in place and working by the end of the day. The EPA and Florida Department of Environmental Protection will also coordinate on-site.
