Optus has been awarded with the title of the fastest 5G network in Australia by independent benchmarking company Ookla in 2021.
The Ookla speedtest measured and compared 5G mobile speeds from all providers in Australia over the first two quarters of 2021.
Ookla analysed the data from more than 330,000 user-initiated 5G Speedtest results and it showed Optus achieved a median download speed of 323Mbps as well as the best latency result of 18 milliseconds.
Telstra recently announced it has crossed the 75 per cent coverage threshold for 5G in Australia.
Another independent report published in February by Systemics Benchmarking also showed that in December 2020 Telstra coverage was seen in 78 per cent of tests compared to Optus 48 per cent of the time.
Optus awarded title of Australias Fastest 5G Mobile Network
Optus 5G has raced to the top of the speed leader board after officially being awarded the coveted title of Australias fastest 5G Mobile Network by independent benchmarking company Ookla the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data and analysis.
The Ookla Speedtest measured 5G mobile speeds from all 5G network providers in Australia for the two quarters of 2021, with data showing Optus achieved median download speeds of 323 Mbps – a staggering 60 percent faster than one of its competitors.
Ookla analysed over 330,000 user-initiated 5G Speedtest results in the first half of the year to determine which carrier showed the fastest network speeds, with Optus taking out top spot overall as well as scoring the best latency result of 18 milliseconds.
Switches on first six mmWave locations
Optus has advanced its 5G leadership, switching on its first six 5G mmWave commercial sites in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, just as the carrier reaches 1 million 5G capable devices on its network.
Optus mmWave sites are equipped with 800Mhz spectrum, tapping into the golden Ghz acquired during last months 5G spectrum auction. For Optus customers this means that once mmWave commercial devices are available they will benefit from the ultra-high capacity and speeds enabled by mmWave. Its this capacity and speed that will be the catalyst for a wave of new use cases that will change the way consumers engage with tech and businesses and how government operate – from downloading ultra-high definition videos in the blink of an eye, to precision industrial automation, driverless cars and smart cities.
