Welch: Federal funds will have lasting impact locally

BRATTLEBORO â The $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package, known as the American Rescue Plan, is set to bring $3.3 million to the town over the course of the next year. âYou know in Brattleboro just what you had to contend with,â U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., said at the Select Board meeting held remotely Tuesday. âWeâve been through a lot.â Welch said the local school district, Windham Southeast School District, will receive $9.4 million through the federal package. He noted thereâs flexibility around uses for the funding, which he believes will have âa lasting impactâ over the next few years.

BRATTLEBORO Town Manager Peter Elwell announced he will be retiring at the end of the year, calling his work here the most satisfying of time his career. After growing up here in Brattleboro and then living away for almost 35 years, coming home has definitely been part of what has made these past six-plus years special, he said the Select Board meeting held remotely Tuesday. But, far beyond the personal pleasure of living again in this community and region, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many dedicated and talented people both inside town government and in the community we serve.

Finance committee split on Select Board stipends

BRATTLEBORO â Members of the Representative Town Meeting Finance Committee unanimously supported the $19,657,991 budget being proposed by the Select Board for fiscal year 2022, but couldnât reach consensus on whether stipends for Select Board members should be increased. âWe were divided,â said Oscar Heller, chairman of the committee. The committee didnât take a vote on the issue but urges that board members be compensated for child and elder care. Heller said if a committee member dissents to an item in the committeeâs report released ahead of the annual March meeting, itâs noted in the document.
