PEORIA, Ill. If
current election results hold, current At-Large Council Member Rita Ali would win the 59th mayoral election in Peoria’s history.
In the middle of her four-year term that expires in May 2023, her win would leave an empty seat in the council chambers.
City Manager Patrick Urich explained Illinois Municipal Code 65 ILCS 5/5-2-12 (g) lays out how the process of filling an empty council seat works. The code states:
If a vacancy occurs in the office of mayor or councilman, the remaining members of the council, within 60 days after the vacancy occurs, shall fill the vacancy by appointment of some person to the office for the balance of the unexpired term or until the vacancy is filled by interim election under Section 3.1-10-50, and until the successor is elected and has qualified.

PEORIA, Ill. – The City of Peoria has signed off on a long-range plan that aims gradually to eliminate its use of combined sewer overflow.
The $109 million plan aims to fully reduce CSO by Dec. 31, 2039.
The implementation of the plan comes by mandate of the Environmental Protection Agency in connection with the Clean Water Act.
The act states municipalities cannot drain wastewater into federal waters without a permit. While Peoria has for years maintained this permit, the EPA has ordered the city to develop a plan to drain these waters elsewhere.
City Manager Patrick Urich said it’s been “a long time coming,” as the city has been negotiating for more than 14 years with the EPA.

PEORIA, Ill. Just after his two-year anniversary of being named Peoria Chief of Police, Loren Marion announced on Monday he will be stepping down effective Jan. 22, 2021.
“This is something my wife and I actually started talking about back in January, and we wanted to see what this year looked like, and we discussed it and prayed about it, and we both came to the conclusion that, you know what, right now’s a good time to pass the baton, per se,” he said.
“There’s a couple dates I wanted to hit, but I definitely did not want to leave when things were at a high, meaning civil unrest and pandemic stuff, so I at least wanted to work through that.”
