City sales tax plunges, shoppers needed

An almost $50,000 loss in anticipated sales tax rebate funding has city officials asking the public for help one purchase at a time.

Economy offers good news again

El Campo’s economy continues to show its strength, performing well despite overall state losses. The monthly sales tax rebate check from State Comptroller Glenn Hegar’s office came in 14.48 percent better than the April 2020 return. Based on February sales, the $344,980 check reflects spending shortly before the global coronavirus-19 pandemic hit Texas. The return puts El Campo’s fiscal year-to-date sales tax revenue up 18.86 percent or $468,908. “These excess funds will allow the city to make necessary purchases that were either not anticipated or not budgeted,” City Manager Courtney Sladek told the Leader-News. “As usual, this line item is carefully monitored as we understand the volatility of sales tax. It is welcome news as we prepare next fiscal year’s budget.”

City Council considering incentives for new hotel

Tax breaks and financial support for a new 72-room El Campo hotel go before city council Monday. Developers had initially planned to construct a Fairfield Inn on U.S. 59 not far from the Palacios intersection, but now turn their sights to a different label under the same chain’s umbrella of corporations. “The developer has decided to offer an extended stay Home2 Suites by Hilton,” City Manager Courtney Sladek said Thursday. The Hilton Home2 Suites branch is designed for extended stay travelers offering larger rooms and amenities typically including salt water pools, large patios with barbecue pits, fitness centers and do-it-yourself laundry areas.
