The Daily Tribune – www.newsofbahrain.com Bahrain will suspend dine-in services at restaurants and cafes and move public and private schools to remote learning for three weeks to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the Health Ministry said yesterday. This came as the National Taskforce for Combatting the Coronavirus (COVID-19) yesterday announced that it had detected a new variant of coronavirus in a number of cases. Health Ministry Undersecretary and National Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus (COVID-19) senior member Dr Waleed Al Manea, however, did not specify which kind. Lieutenant Colonel Dr Manaf Al Qahtani, head of the task force monitoring committee, said the new variant is spreading quickly and has the ability to mutate at a fast rate.

MEED | Covid-19 vaccines stocks grow in Mena region

Countries in the GCC and wider Mena region have started to receive consignments of the coronavirus jabs The number of Covid-19 cases in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region crossed 4,835,531 on 25 January 2021, according to Worldometers data collated by MEED. Countries in the GCC comprise 24.6 per cent (1,187,491) of all regional cases, while Iran’s 1,372,977 infections make up 28.4 per cent of the Mena total. Inoculation efforts are gathering pace in the region as more Mena governments progress in terms of vaccine procurement and distribution. More than 2.4 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been given in the UAE alone, which has the world’s second highest administration rate for the jab.
