South east London boasts some of the capital s best-loved pubs. But it has not been exempt from the sweep of pubs closing across the UK over recent decades. It has been estimated that more than 2,000 pubs across the UK may have had to end trading permanently in 2020 as lockdowns forced universal closures. This would be more than double the average number of pubs lost in recent years.
