When I was in high school, I lived on a carb-forward diet of $2 garlic bread. It was the best thing going at the tuckshop back then: soft hot dog buns slathered in cold garlic butter, then warmed up hastily in the microwave. They tasted like heaven. I must have eaten at least 50 a year.

The five best garlic breads. Since then, my love affair with tragically basic garlic bread has doggedly persisted. (I’m not alone; there’s an entire forum on Reddit, called /GarlicBreadMemes, dedicated to its bready deity.) Despite messing around with elevated homemade versions topped with things like Parmesan and various herbs, I always go back to the stuff wrapped in tinfoil.
