£16m to support Mamhilad Park Estate in Pontypool

PONTYPOOL-BASED property development and investment business Johnsey Estates has raised £16 million to refinance previous debt facilities and provide working capital for the company’s key development sites, including Mamhilad Park Estate. With more than 180 occupiers on site, Mamhilad Park Estate offers 1.5 million square feet of office and industrial space, including the former Grade II-listed Nylon Spinners complex. It was purchased by Johnsey Estates in 1986 and is now home to some 1,800 people spanning a diverse range of sectors including professional services, warehousing, distribution and the public sector. The £16 million loan from Lloyds Bank will be used to ensure the long-term sustainable development of Mamhilad Park Estate with Johnsey Estates continuing to work with Torfaen County Borough Council to progress the development of an urban village alongside the existing buildings on site.

Let s go for a walk: To the Folly Tower at Pontypool

1. Cross the bridge and pass the front of the Active Living Centre to enter Pontypool Park. Beyond the building turn right and follow the broad drive heading towards Pontymoile Gates for a short distance. Ignore the first left turn towards the ski slope but around 100 yards further on turn left to take a clear but unmade path rising into the woods. The path soon becomes a wide sandstone track climbing through the trees. Further up it passes through a tunnel and emerges to ascend a grassy glade. Near the top a sign post indicates a right fork to the Shell Grotto, which you can now see crowning the top of the ridge ahead. A final short but steep climb brings you up to the building.

The story of Little Mill Reform School, which closed in 1922

SECRETS of Monmouthshire’s Reformatory School are revealed in this story of a bold strategy to divert boys from a life of crime. In 1910 at Monmouthshire’s first Reformatory School, established in 1859 at Little Mill, one of the juvenile offenders found himself at the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons. Teenager Robert Wood was among boys located from the Midlands following an expansion of the school’s catchment area. When the School was opened in February 1859 to cope with an increase in juvenile crime in Victorian Britain it was seen to be ideally placed between the prison at Usk, Pontypool and other valley towns.
