I first met Sibongile Khumalo in my early 20s when I came to hustle in Johannesburg in May 2000. The big city was still bustling with culture at the time. The Johannesburg (now Mandela) Theatre, The Market Theatre in New Town, as well as the suburbs of Yeoville and Melville offered the best of what cultural life represented.
Of course, we lived a double life; jazz at the theatre with Khumalo et al on stage today, Oskido and Thebe on the decks in Midrand and Rosebank the next day.
The phenomenology of it all is that we kept same company as male friends/brothers but changed companions between the theatre and night clubs. Dress and drinks also changed per occasion.

The African National Congress (ANC) said it is “deeply saddened” by the untimely passing of legendary opera singer and jazz songstress, Sibongile Khumalo, who died on Thursday.
According to a statement issued on her official Facebook page, Khumalo succumbed to stroke-related complications after a lengthy illness. She was 63.
“Mama Sibongile s hits such as ’Mayihlome’ and ’Thula Mama’ are some of the tracks that dominated music charts for a long time.
“Her decades-long singing career has touched the hearts of thousands of fans across South Africa and beyond,” said ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe.

From the streets of Soweto to the world stage, legendary musician Sibongile Khumalo knew just how to hit the right notes with her melodious voice and powerful lyrical content.
With a career spanning over three decades, the world-renowned jazz and opera vocalist inspired many artists in the classical, jazz, gospel and opera genres.
She shared her gift of song at the inauguration of South Africaâs first black democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela in 1994. MaâMngoma as she was affectionately known, also showcased her world class talent to  the world  at the final Rugby World Cup match in 1995.
