Galizia dog när en bilbomb exploderade i hennes bil i oktober 2017. Den undersökande maltesiska journalisten Daphne Caruana Galizia blev under sin karriär en av de mest synliga och omtalade journalisterna på Malta. Galizia gjorde flera uppmärksammade avslöjanden om korruptionen inom näringslivet och den politiska eliten på Malta. Galizia riktade också direkt kritik mot den då sittande premiärministern, Joseph Muscat, och pekade på att han och hans ministrar var inblandade i korruption.
