Maltese Lockdown Festival awarded European Citizen s Prize

Malta s Lockdown Festival, the first Maltese online music festival set up during the COVID-19 pandemic, is one of 30 winners of the European Citizen s Prize 2020. Malta s office of the European Parliament said on its Facebook page that the festival is the national winner of the prize. The European Citizen s Prize was chaired by European Parliament vice-president Dita Charanzová. Contestants were nominated by MEPs. The prize is intended to reward individuals or groups who have distinguished themselves in strengthening European integration. The award ceremony will be held in November. Back in March 2020, four artists, Vegard Flatoey, Zoe Camikkeri, Niels Plotard and Keit Bonnici organised a virtual music and arts festival after the cancellation of countless shows and events due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Researching consumption patterns during COVID-19

An artistic research project held between 2016 and 2017 questioned the effects of consumption on buyers. This year, a second edition is delving deeper into the subject and is particularly looking at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our production, shopping and consumption habits. You Are What You Buy (YAWYB) reacts to current issues on consumption and consumerism, offering an alternative artistic experience. The first edition was a year-long transdisciplinary project that departed from a reflection on our need to affirm ourselves as consumers. The research process and final presentation were set in a supermarket in Malta, offering a different possibility of where and how to experience art − away from the art institution.
