'Had to Fight' to be Treated: Black Woman Nearly Died of Rare Skin Disorder After Being Sent Home from Two Hospitals Because Doctors Didn't Recognize Her Symptoms

A Black woman from the United Kingdom said she went to three different emergency rooms while suffering from a “horrific” skin disease before receiving treatment because doctors didn’t think her symptoms were severe enough. Kanayo Dike-Oduah, 27, told BBC that it was only when she was seen by a doctor with darker skin that she was finally admitted to the hospital. “I feel failed,” she said. “They literally said, ‘If you hadn’t come today, you would have died,’” Dike-Oduah recalled. The disease carries a mortality rate of up to 50 percent in severe cases. It is most often a reaction to medications and starts with flu-like symptoms before progressing to spreading painful rashes and blisters.

Why is it harder to diagnose disorders on non-white skin?

Why It's So Important For Representation In Dermatology | Skin Cancer In People Of Color

The Lack Of Representation In Dermatology Can Be Deadly For People Of Color Skin cancer can be more difficult to diagnose in skin of color but new initiatives are increasing representation in dermatology. By Jessica Chia Julia Noni Ilia J. Smith, a 40-year-old nurse practitioner in Dallas, never suspected she’d be confronted with a life-threatening health concern in her thirties. She was a medical professional. She ate well, worked out regularly. Sure, she spent a lot of time basking in the sun wearing low-SPF tanning oils, but as a Black woman, she wasn’t worried about sun protection. Several years earlier, a friend of hers, who worked as a physician’s assistant in a dermatology practice, flagged a mole on her thigh during a day at the spa, but Smith brushed it off as a birthmark.
