A rational solution will be possible if this matter is taken out of the hands of politicians whose actions will not be based on science or religion.

Burial of Muslims who have died of COVID has become a huge political issue. Science and religion seem to have been overtaken by raw politics. All this while the pandemic is raging in the country with more than 39000 cases reported and the numbers detected averages around 400-500 on a daily basis. If these increases continue at this rate, it is likely that the total will exceed 50,000 before the end of January 2021. The death toll has reached 185 although as a percentage of the total infected, it is less than 0.5%. No doubt even one death is too

Around twenty Muslim families, whose loved ones died after being declared positive for COVID-19, have refused to claim the bodies. The state has borne the expenses and cremated these bodies against the wishes of the families. According to the Muslim faith, cremating a dead body of a Muslim is sacrilegious. Yet the Government of Sri Lanka cremates all those who die after being tested positive for Virus. Burning Muslims without consent and against the wishes of their families has caught the eye of the international media. Almost all of the major international networks have reported on this issue.
