IFJ Asia-Pacific affiliates mark World Press Freedom Day

Freedom, Justice, Rights. These were the calls made by the IFJ and its Asia-Pacific affiliates on May 3, World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2023. From Afghanistan to Australia, and everywhere in between, journalists and their representative bodies arranged a wide array of activities, calling on governments and media stakeholders to work to improve and support press freedom. This international commemoration is an important opportunity for journalists, media workers, and their unions to reflect on developments in their media landscapes, and organise against attacks on media professionals and press freedom.

Maldives: Journalists issued threats for story on politician and tourism mogul

Two senior Maldivian journalists were issued serious threats via phone and text on April 7 following the publication of an article about a high-profile arbitration case between a Maldivian tourism group and Hilton Worldwide. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate the Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) in strongly condemning the threats against two respected journalists and calls on the Maldivian police for urgent measures to ensure the protection of media workers in the Maldives and the swift apprehension of the perpetrators.

Maldives: Greater efforts needed to confront obstacles for media, says IFJ

Despite progress and promises made by the current Maldivian government to address press freedom, there are still obstacles for journalists in the country. During an evaluation mission in the Maldives, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) met with journalists, media leaders and union stakeholders and notes a critical need for the establishment of an industrial legislative framework for media and other workers in the country.
