Kingston Pool Closure Causes Concern

Kingfisher Leisure Centre closed in December 2019, due to urgent repair works on its roof. From here on, families, schools and individuals have had little communication from the centre about the length of this closure. From an inspection of the 36 year old building, Kingston Council estimated that it would cost £5 million to repair. However, on the 21st of October, 2020, in an announcement on the Kingston Council website, Cllr Caroline Kerr confirmed the council’s ‘bold’ plans for a new leisure centre on that site. In the announcement, she stated that they would ‘invest in a high quality, sustainable leisure centre and swimming pool which looks to the future.’ Another councillor explained this plan as ‘the most cost-effective in the long run’. As a result of these necessary changes, Kingston’s population’s access to leisure facilities and swimming pools in their area is limited.
