As the Honolulu Police Commission launches a search for a new chief, the police union is pushing for the hire of someone from within the department – not the mainland.
Malcolm Lutu, president of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers, made that clear to Honolulu City Council members during a committee meeting on Wednesday.
“I think we need to keep this local,” he said.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballardâs resignation caught many by surprise, including the police commission who was willing to work with her following the negative reviews.
Ballardâs performance review came out Tuesday, just a day after a deadly officer-involved shooting.
In a mostly negative assessment, the commission wanted her to change the way she managed her department.
