Over half a million in Sabah completed census, says state Statistics Dept

KOTA KINABALU: Some 503,000 or 12.9% of the total population in Sabah have been accounted for in the ongoing census process as of Monday (March 8), according to the state Malaysian Statistics Department. Sabah Statistics director Zainol Jamil said this is based on the estimated state population of 3.91 million people in 2020, which included over one million non-Malaysian citizens. The census this time was done in various modes, with eCensus (online) contributing the higher percentage of 59.1%, while 40.9% of the census information was obtained in person (face-to-face) or through phone by census staff, he said in a statement here. “The Kota Kinabalu district has the highest number of those who completed their census, with 100,862 individuals representing 18% of the population in the district, followed by Tawau with 16.5% (76,342) and Sandakan with 14.3% (71,533), ” he added.

Malaysian Statistics Department said in a statement that the decrease in the overall index was attributed by the decline in transport (-11.1 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (-3.3 percent); clothing and footwear (-0.5 percent) and furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (-0.1 percent). Nevertheless, food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 1.4 percent year on year. Meanwhile, CPI for the period of January to November 2020 decreased 1.1 percent as compared to the same period last year.
