Japan, Malaysia defense chiefs hold teleconference
Japan s defense chief has talked with his Malaysian counterpart, expressing serious concerns over a Chinese law that authorizes its coast guard to use weapons.
Defense Minister Kishi Nobuo held a video teleconference on Thursday with Malaysian Senior Minister of Defence Dato Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob.
Japan s Defense Ministry says Kishi underscored the requirement to uphold and reinforce the Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
It says the two sides reaffirmed the critical need for observing international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The ministry says Kishi condemned the launching of ballistic missiles by North Korea last month.
