India: Former Marthoma Church head Philipose Mar Chrysostom passes away

He was the longest-serving bishop in India . The former head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church and the longest-serving bishop in India Dr Philipose Mar Chrysostom died due to age-related ailments on Wednesday, a church spokesman said.
He was 103.
Mar Chrysostom was discharged from a hospital in Thiruvalla on Tuesday. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Kumbanad near here around 1.15 am, the spokesman said.
An outstanding religious dignitary with a genuine humanitarian outlook and global vision, Mar Chrysostom was awarded Padma Bhushan by President Ram Nath Kovind in 2018.

Those who have happened to meet or hear Philipose Mar Chrysostom even once will instantly recognise some of his hallmarks; a mix of mundane with the weighty discipline of theology, instinctive humour, and the sardonic use of language.
He would talk of God for hours as though he is talking about a person in the neighbourhood, tease his listeners, crack a joke about himself and his God, all the while spreading light and warmth all around. Indeed, laughter had a great deal to do with the prelate’s connections that transcended much beyond his religion and cut across all walks of life.

Thiruvalla: Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy visited Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church headquarters here on Thursday. The Congress leaders held talks with the church head Theodosius Mar Thoma Metropolitan seeking support in the upcoming assembly polls.
On the other day, the two leaders had visited the Orthodox church headquarters.
Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church is a crucial group in Pathanamthitta district. During the local body polls, the church had differences of opinion with the UDF. A dispute had broken out over the representation in district panchayat.
