could be higher. it s difficult to confirm. but right now here in central and eastern long island, we re looking at anywhere from a foot and a half to two feet of snow so far throughout this big nor easter. now here s the good news, as molly said, it s going to be moving quickly, it s moving out towards the northern atlantic. it clears out overnight. tomorrow, on sunday, not only can we get cleanup, but family and friends can get back out and play in this snow. tonight though you want to stay inside. temperatures here in shirley still the feels-like temperature when you come wine the wind, we re at -1 right now. so still quite cold. jon: way too dry for making snowmen. not right now anyway enter can t even do a snowball fight, jon. he s in atlanta s oldest neighborhood and the reason you re there, icy trees. reporter: icy trees, freezing temperatures p- 28 degrees. freezing rain has been picking up all morning long. i want to give you a sense how cold it was overnight. this isn t a trash bag. it s a child s coat that was left here. completely frozen. you can snap that thing in half. come on back here. this is how big of an issue the freezing rain has been. starting to accumulate ice on this table. when we got here about 5:00 a.m. this morning there was nothing on this table. the roads were year. the roads were nice to drive on. that s not the case right now. decatur, just outside of atlanta, if you are good at making snowmen, i m not. i m from los angeles. you could, if you could make a snowman you could make one with the ice that s accumulated here all across the city. but the real concern as you mentioned those power lines, those downed power lines i m not sure if you can see behind me here there s a power li
saying that the and wind chill advisory, saying that the temperatures could go down to negative 5 to negative 15 because of the wind chill tonight. and we re going to see icy conditions on the roads. and so, of course, they are also telling everyone to stay home, only travel in an emergency, anderson. a lot of kids are going to be bummed. it s not good snow for making snowmen and snow balls and stuff like that, the way you were able to blow it around. the federal government closed its offices last night. has that helped keep you know, keep people off the roads? reporter: it absolutely has helped get people off the roads. the federal government shut down, many schools shut down, certainly the ones right here in d.c. and others in surrounding areas. and that has helped keep traffic to a minimum. we have been here all day, anderson. we haven t seen more than a few cars go by at a time. mostly what we have seen is the snowplows. the d.c. government has had about 200 snowplows on th
checking the roads, the virginia department of transportation website, it s very clear that across the area here, certainly in the shenandoah, icy conditions, a lot of snow, but so far no accidents. so that means that a lot of people have used common sense and decided not to try to drive anywhere. this gives you a little bit of an idea, we made a little tiny snowman just to show the quality of the snow. it packs and it s wet and great for making snowmen or snowwomen as the case may be but not necessarily good to drive on. it s also a real potential for problems as the snow appears on the power lines and such here in the washington, d.c., area. you could have a problem, of course, with power outages. so we re checking for all of that, john, and we ll be getting back to you as the situation develops. my snowman is falling apart.
