i will say this. kevin mccarthy is fighting a daily battle. he has to the get from one day to the next. yesterday he was able to adjourn the house of representatives. that was a good thing. not a great thing, good, relative. today, according to people close to him, he wants to not lose any of the 200 people he has with him. 201, 202 depending upon the vote. he wants to show visible progress, what he calls visible progress to the rest of the house republican conference. those 200 people in his talks with conservatives. now, good is relative. we have still seven ballots in he s still relatively unlikely to become the speaker. relative because he s gone through seven ballots, but that s where we are. he s making concessions. run through a few of them. concessions on the rules committee, concessions on making it just one person in the house who can vote to have no confidence in the speaker like they do in parliament.
at the top. i heard a part a and a part b in the same sentence. if this is what it takes to get kevin the speakership, then it s worth swallowing and doing to do that, if kevin loses, then essentially there s a sense that maybe control was lost on the house floor moving forward, whomever the next speaker may be. he s making concessions. if he does not get the speakership, say it s someone like scalise or somebody that we re not talking about, are they going to be holden to the same concessions that mccarthy has been making, doug? we don t know. that s the fear that a lot of republican members had. one member said to me yesterday morning that they wished that mccarthy or whomever comes next plays michael in the godfather and says here s my offer, nothing, take it or leave it. it s not clear that anybody would be able to do that. that s the sense of frustration that you re hearing from members at these 20 who are holding out as these goalposts, they always
of the mccarthy opponents. that vote to adjourn passed by one vote. it was a very close ballot, so it s unclear if they would even be able to adjourn or be compelled to continue to do this over and over and over again, keep in mind that the rule is you have to keep voting until you get a speaker of the house. and three days now of not having a house of representatives fully constituted. john. john: chad pergram watching the action on capitol hill. thank you. sandra. sandra: let s bring in kellyanne conway, former counselor to president trump, fox news contributor and ka consulting. we have been watching it play out on capitol hill, it appears mccarthy has lost the seventh house speaker vote despite making concessions. what say you at this seventh hour. inertia is the most powerful physical force in politics unless it is taken over by friction. there s been plenty of friction
0 harris: yeah, bret baier, on special report. you have transportation secretary pete buttigieg. find our co-workers luggage. i will. harris: thank you so very much. this is fun, right, em? we will cover it as it happens. america reports. sandra: great coverage, team. america reports with a live look at the house floor where lawmakers are back at it for a third day now trying to select a house speaker and once again it appears congressman elect kevin mccarthy is headed for defeat. hello, welcome, i m sandra smith on this thursday afternoon. hello, john. john: welcome to friday eve, sandra. gop dissenters nominating florida congressman-elect byron donalds and democrats unified behind hakeem jeffries as that party threw his name into the hat for house speaker. ahead of the proceedings, republicans acknowledging they did not expect much to change. nothing [inaudible] i wouldn t be here [inaudible] doesn t really matter what my vote is at this point because he does
joining me is ali vitali. two things i want to know, on the democratic side, how loudly were they laughinger, and at any point, did they start to break out ticker tape and have a parade? and on the other side, what are the conversations taking place now that they have adjourned between mccarthy and the 20 who oppose him? so look, i didn t see ticker tape from democrats, but i did see popcorn. you re not far off with that. and then on the other side of it, republicans are now eating pizza, like literally on my way to do this live shot with you, there were boxes and boxes of pizza being wheeled in because they have a long night ahead of them. mccarthy is still huddling with conservative lawmakers trying to find a way to make inroads. here s the problem, they didn t just meet the other day. they have been talking about this for weeks. mccarthy has been making concessions, trying to find ways to get these freedom caucus members onboard, and it s clear that they have an all or nothing app
