Governor Anyang’ Nyongó and LAPFUND CEO David Koros Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to pave way for the major project whose implementation starts in two weeks. According to the deal, the county government has provided about 12 acres of land for the project, and will also develop infrastructures such as roads, sewer services, electricity and water.

The project will be funded by the county government workers’ pension scheme, the Local Authorities Provident Fund (LapFund). In a move aimed at improving the city’s aesthetic value, the fund and the county government have agreed to pull down more than 120 houses at the estate. The process started on Tuesday, with the demolition of structures in parts of the lakeside city’s estates and payments of a ‘token’ in the new resettlement plan to allow tenants to seek alternative residences.

Tension gripped the 100 years old Makasembo estate as the County government began to pull down more than 150 houses some of them condemned as unfit for living. The city council askaris under the command of Samwel Orimba, engaged protestors in running battles as they tried to block the demolition exercise and groundbreaking ceremony. Orimba had to call off the exercise after about five steel gates were demolished by the city bulldozers to pave way for governor Anyang Nyong os urban renewal and affordable housing unit projects.
