The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in Eastern Cape is working collaboratively with the Makana Local Municipality to raise awareness about the impact of water pollution and water borne diseases. The awareness campaign comes in light of water quality challenges faced in parts of the Makana Local Municipality, where E.coli bacteria was detected in water samples tested between February and May, from different water points in the municipality.
Political weakness and cowardice of ANC political office bearers who have surrendered our municipalities to unaccountable public officials and bureaucrats is at the centre of collapsing service delivery systems.
We have lost our dilution capacity and our rivers have been turned into hazardous sewers breeding harmful pathogens. This means that cholera is only one of the risks we are facing from raw sewage in our rivers.
Spokesperson, Anele Mjekula, said the municipality "received water testing results from the resampling" done and "which indicated that there were failures in the water quality, in that the presence of E.coli was detected."
