In celebration of the coming 20th anniversary of the beginning of the Ormsby’s house renovation scheduled to be completed on July 4, 2001 I bring you the history of the fabled and unfortunate but still beloved Ormsby House Hotel and Casino.

Paiute means âtrue uteâ or â water uteâ.The Paiutes entered Utah about A.D. 1100-1200. The tribe have been alive for more than 916 years now.The Paiutes of Utah live in the south, where the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau meet. The Paiutes had their own language called Paiute Language. It was in the 19th century when the Paiutes made contact with whitemen.
There was a raid, Pony Express versus the Paiute Clan. It started in the1860âs, traders from the Pony Express kidnapped and raped two Paiute girls. When that happened tribal members responded with absolute force to get the two girls. Therefore, the tribal members killed five whites in the process of rescuing the two girls. Many times, when I wore a younger manâs clothes, my family and I enjoyed weekend trips to Pyramid Lake. This beautiful body of water is one of the last remnants of Ancient Lake Lahontan that once covered much of northern Nevada. Several times, we fished for the cui-ui fish when they were running to the mouth of the Truckee River in the Spring. In later years, when I had a motor boat, several of us fished for the cutthroat trout that can reach the size of salmon.
Pyramid Lake is located on the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation and permits for fishing must be obtained from the tribe. When I had my boat, I sometimes crossed over to the eastern shore of the lake where many interesting tufa formations can be seen. One of these is the âStone Mother and Basketâ and nearby is the stunning 500-foot high pyramid shaped formation that inspired John C. Fremont to name the place Pyramid Lake in 1844.
