After just over a year in quarantine, with news cycles consumed by a global pandemic and nationwide protests for racial justice, more than a few people yelled “Finish him!” to bid farewell to 2020. Now, as we enter spring 2021 and return to some semblance of normalcy, “Mortal Kombat” is indeed one of the first major movies fans can see in theaters again (though it will be streaming on HBO Max as well).

Mortal Kombatis the gold standard taking the genre of fighting games to another level. The same could be said about the 1995 film, which is regarded as one of the best film adaptations of a video game.

Mortal Kombat is getting a much-needed reboot thanks to Warner Bros., and this time, the movie is sticking to its violent roots and bringing the gory martial arts action plus insane fatalities we love from the games to the big screen. Nearly three decades after its release, Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 ‘Mortal Kombat’ is still celebrated among viewers for being one of the best video game adaptations ever. So it’s safe to say that expectations for this new version are pretty high. And while first-time director Simon McQuoid does a great job of updating the film for the modern day, it fails just a tiny bit in reaching the lofty bar set by the original.
But the good news first. McQuoid’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ will no doubt satisfy fans looking for intense action sequences, gory violence and opulent sets. The cheesy dialogues, mirroring the original film, are also pretty much intact. The movie also benefits greatly from casting real-life martial artists in main roles, giving a breathtaking fervour and excitement to the fight scenes.

The trailer for the fantasy action movie Mortal Kombat was released recently and earned favourable reviews. The film, which will be a reboot of the original series, will release on April 16 across theatres and can be streamed on HBO Max.

Scorpion battles Sub Zero: The scene will be an interesting watch given that the two are worlds apart from each other. One kills with freezing powers while the other can set opponents on fire. It remains to be seen how the beloved characters turn out when fire and ice meet each other.
