Operation Vala: 16 arrested, 32 fines issued, 49 bags of goods seized

Durban – Operation Vala – a two-day multidisciplinary operation in Durban involving various units from the SAPS, metro police, Home Affairs, Department of Labour and other stakeholders – resulted in 16 arrests, 32 fines being issued and 49 bags of goods seized.
The operation is to tighten security measures across the provinces through law enforcement operations and monitoring cross-border and inter-provincial movement to ensure citizens’ safety.
Joining the operation was acting Transport and Community Safety and Liaison MEC Kwazi Mshengu, acting SAPS provincial commissioner Major-General Thulani Gonya and his management, Durban district commander Major-General Vukani Mgobhozi and the eThekwini Municipality Business Support Unit.

Durban â A suspect who was found withdrawing cash from different Sassa cards in the Durban CBD is expected to make a first appearance in court on Monday.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, said the suspect, 47, faces charges of fraud and possession of a stolen property.
âHis arrest came after an intelligence driven operation that was conducted on Sunday by the Durban Central District Task Team.
âThe team pounced on the suspect who was withdrawing cash from different Sassa cards at an ATM on Anton Lembede Street (Smith Street). The suspect was driving a exclusive Mercedes-Benz which he recently bought.â
Police in Umhlanga, Durban have made a major bust over the weekend – after they nabbed a notorious fraudster for his elaborate ‘SASSA cards scam’. The crook, who was also identified as the owner of an exclusive Mercedes-Benz, will now be hauled to court on Monday.

Dozens of SASSA grant recipients lost out on their support payments due to the actions of this 47-year-old, who was discovered with a cash loot of R7 640 upon his person. A USB stick with sensitive information about the cards used was also recovered by SAPS. Meanwhile, a statement was shared by law enforcement officials on Monday:
