A crop disease which has yet to be identified is devastating maize fields in the western district of Chuadanga, dashing the hopes of local farmers to turn a profit from producing the cereal grain.
No fewer than 470 maize farmers have been reportedly killed in Katsina State, Northwest of Nigeria in the past three years. Katsina is the home state of the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. SaharaReporters reports that Katsina is one of states in the Northern Nigeria that Islamic terrorists have ravaged with so many communities sacked and residents forced into becoming internally displaced persons.
Bangladesh is expected to produce more maize this year as farmers, encouraged by profitable prices, have planted the coarse grains on an increased area of land.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has promised to undertake reforms within the farming, fishing and livestock sector that will make agriculture competitive.
