Maitahi Bayview developers suspend plan change to refine

Skara Bohny16:44, Jul 07 2021 Supplied The plan change which could see the dotted white line (centre top) filled with houses has been suspended, but developers say it is just a temporary break to give them a chance to “refine” their plans. The syndicate behind the Maitahi-Bayview development have temporarily suspended its plan change, but expects things to get going again shortly. The suspension was indicated by the Nelson City Council via a brief notice on its website saying that the applicant had advised the council on June 23 that the private plan change would go on hold. The plan change is required in order to rezone the land in Atawhai Valley, over the hills and into Kākā Valley. Should the plan change go through and the land be rezoned, the syndicate made up of Maitai Development Co General Partner Ltd and Bayview Nelson Ltd will be able to build their proposed development of about 750 houses.

Kākā Valley: The wider political view

Save the Maitai to launch legal challenge to subdivision development

The total proposed number of houses in the development is 750, but the Save the Maitai campaign is focused on stopping 550 slated for the Kākā Valley. At the public meeting, organisers said they needed to raise about $110,000 to legally challenge the Nelson City Council’s 2019 Future Development Strategy, and to contest the proposed subdivision at an upcoming Resource Management Act (RMA) hearing. A key part of the group s argument alleges inadequate consultation in the 2019 Future Development Strategy. Dr Aaron Stallard told the meeting the council did not make its intentions clear about the possibility the Kākā Valley would be considered for housing – when in 2006 a previous document had ruled out any development due to strong public opposition.
