Barber was born in Scottsguard, Sask., on July 17, 1921. She was the youngest of eight children born to Ernest and Ida McIlmoyl. Barber was educated through Grade 12 in Frobisher. She worked in Oxbow, where she met her husband Melvin Barber. They moved to North Portal where Melvin worked with the Canada Border Services Agency. They had two sons and now have three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
