While the monetary donations are important, the non-profit s founder, Doc Goodwin, said that s nothing if they aren t able to help veterans. The organization s mission is to prevent veteran suicides. An average of 22 veterans a day die by suicide and the Maine Veteran s Project s mission is to lower that number. For the past few years, the organization was working on home improvement projects to help veterans with the financial stress some of them face.

Although veterans account for only .045 percent of the population, they make up about 20 percent of all suicides in the United States. It s why MVP is on a mission to change those numbers and try to prevent suicides in general.
