MAINE, USA In less than six years, the Maine Veteran s Project has raised a million dollars to help veterans across the state.
While the monetary donations are important, the non-profit s founder, Doc Goodwin, said that s nothing if they aren t able to help veterans.
The organization s mission is to prevent veteran suicides. An average of 22 veterans a day die by suicide and the Maine Veteran s Project s mission is to lower that number. For the past few years, the organization was working on home improvement projects to help veterans with the financial stress some of them face.

ORONO, Maine For many of us, the pandemic has put into perspective how great a toll isolation can have on our mental health. This isn t a new problem for at least one group of people, though Maine s veterans.
According to the Maine Veterans Project, 22 veterans and active duty service members die by suicide every day. Although veterans account for only .045 percent of the population, they make up about 20 percent of all suicides in the United States. It s why MVP is on a mission to change those numbers and try to prevent suicides in general.

ORONO, Maine Even during a pandemic, Mainers are still working together.
Just ask Doc Goodwin. He s the President and founder of the Maine Veterans Project (MVP). For five years, Goodwin and his volunteers have helped raise roofs, donated cars, or donated fuel to dozens of veterans in our state.
“Our primary goal is veteran wellness while directly tar targeting veteran suicide, Goodwin said. Maine is relatively sparse in resources [while] we’re also very heavy with veteran population.”
