Intertidal: Maine’s Fisherman’s Forum returns as virtual event

It feels like it was the last hurrah, thinking back to the Maine Fishermen’s Forum last year, held March 5-7 at the Samoset Resort in Rockland. It was the 46th event that drew fishermen from throughout the state. The purpose is to share information and experiences about everything from advances in groundfishing gear to discussions about wind energy. And to enjoy good company too. There’s an annual Seafood Banquet and Auction as well as social events throughout the three-day forum.
This year, things will, of course, be different. But, true to the persistent and flexible nature of the fishing community, there will still be opportunities for conversations about important topics facing Maine’s fishing fleet. BRUNSWICK The Maine Fishermen’s Forum’s board of directors will award $40,000 in scholarships this year, despite having to cancel the live event normally held in March.
Applications will be accepted until Wednesday, March 3, for up to 26 Scholarship Book Awards. Scholarships will be a minimum of $1,500 each and will be payable to the winning students.
Candidates must complete the forum application, be in at least their second year of college or a vocational school and will need to submit a transcript along with the application. Scholarship applications are available online at mainefishermensforum.org. They also can be requested by calling 207-442-7700.
