Elizabethton getting ready for First Friday on May 7

ELIZABETHTON — The first First Friday of the season in Downtown Elizabethton is set to take place May 7, with the emphasis on many different types of arts, from drawing and painting to weird art, chalk art, live music, theatrical performers and a lot more. The event begins at 9 a.m. and will continue all day and through the evening until 11. Everything is free and open to people of all ages. Roger Bailey is especially excited about the First Friday kickoff. Although he grew up here, he is an artist who is new to downtown. He and his wife, Abigail, have opened Birdhouse Studio at 429.5 E. Elk Ave. The studio is already open for business and will hold its ribbon cutting May 4.

Several local groups come together for Global Youth Service Day

ELIZABETHTON — Several agencies in Elizabethton and Carter County are joining together to offer an opportunity to join with millions of others around the globe in celebrating Earth Day and Global Youth Service Day this month. Carter County Drug Prevention, the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library, Main Street Elizabethton, Keep Carter County Beautiful and Red Legacy Recovery are joining forces to host a book discussion and litter clean-up in downtown Elizabethton. “We encourage community members of all ages to come share in a roundtable discussion of the book ‘No One is too Small to Make a Difference’ by Greta Thunberg’” said Carter County Drug Prevention Executive Director Jilian Reece.

Elizabethton Parks continues to look at water projects

Boat ramp project in works, whitewater park survey being conducted ELIZABETHTON — The Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department is working on several projects and several of those are water-related recreation projects. One of these is the boat ramp off the Master Sgt. Donnie Davis Bridge on Tenn. Highway 400, which will provide access to the north shore of the Watauga River. The department’s staff is continuing to work with the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency on getting the ramp established. The effort includes the creation and installation of signage on site that is required to obtain feedback from the public.
