the countries in europe and the united states and canada have lusened to the needs and have answered with a major call and this week s delivery is the most repeat example of that. but everybody from turkey to england to the u.s. to canada are providing ukrainians important defensive weapons to kick putin out of ukraine. and we know that there have just been so many, we ve seen that russian forces have shifted focus away from kiev and towards the south and that so many eyes now are on odesa, the main port city. if it falls, it could financially cripple that entire country. what do you, how far do you think the u.s. should go to keep that this is a key issue. when we were in romania, we led with romanian leadership, the romanian military and u.s. advisors at an airbase in romania. this is a very troubling situation.
sitting at the table for them to say, oh, this one time ukraine came into our territory, that s going to blow up negotiations. it s a little bit of an interesting place to be, diplomatically. yeah, it certainly is. you know, given the numerous questions that have existed since the start of any talks about just how serious russia is when it comes to those talks. berman, i appreciate it. thank you. right now, russian forces are focusing on the eastern part of ukraine, specifically the donbas region. they have been heavily focused on gaining control of the southern ukrainian city of mariupol, a connecting point from the donbas in the east to the critical port city of odesa. gives you a sense of their plans for territorial expansion perhaps in the south and the east. cnn international correspondent ed lavandera is in odesa today. ukrainians watching this closely. it s the main port city. russia clearly has designs on
closely what s happening in the north and what s going to happen just to the east of here and also, we need to remind people that the russian navy has naval warships just off the coast of this port city. so that is obviously a great deal of concern for the residents here as they watch all of this closely and trying to figure out how all of this is going to unfold and the timing of it all. are we talking days and weeks from something that might start pushing toward this area and change the climate here? no question. we ve been showing pictures of tank traps in the middle of the city streets. that s what people have to live with, with fears of the invasion. ed lavandera, good to have you there. be safe. new this morning. the u.s. and its allies are weighing, if they can guarantee somehow security for ukraine in the event that it does forgo, at least for now, pursuing nato membership. what exactly such a security guarantee would look like.
