missile only days after successfully detonating its most powerful nuclear weapon. north korea s state-run media claims kim jong-un s military is ready to, quote, blow up the u.s. main land and annihilate americans. let s check in with our pentagon krt barbara starr. barbara, how is the u.s. military responding? reporter: right now, wolf, nobody is engaging in very much cool, calm, collected talk about all of this. there s a lot of rhetoric from washington all the way to pyongyang. right now hard to see how this all ends. new live fire drills by south korea s navy as tensions continue to rise. several war ships sending a message to kim jong-un south korea will hit back against any provocation. president trump sending his own message, tweeting, i am allowing japan and south korea to buy a substantially increased amount of highly sophisticated military equipment from the united states.
intented to actually take action that would curb north korea s sort of behavior is when they think the united states might be crazy enough to do something alone. so i think they re just trying to send some messages to incentivize china. i think they re not excited to deal with this issue. the last thing they want is a more active united states and/or japan and south korea seeking to reunite the peninsula and put another western democracy near the chinese main land. this is just the kind of signaling that needs to go on before a big meeting this week so that the chinese come prepared with some real measures that they re prepared to take to get the north koreans to curb their behavior. and quickly ryan nobles at the white house, this meeting between president trump and the chinese president not at the white house, but we re talking about in mar-a-lago. explain that setting and why.
florida, john miller. and mayor, thanks for being with us. we spoke with our reporter, jacob sob rjake soboroff. you have 21,000 people without power in your neck of the woods. are you ready to handle more outages? yeah, hallie, we re doing the best we can. power outages right now are the least of our worries. we re in a unique position. my city is located on amelia island which is a barrier island connected by the main land by two small bridges which both have been shut down for any traffic at this time. our concern obviously is to know who chose not to follow the mandatory evacuations. they re beyond the time to try to get off and the shelter in place phase and we re hoping for the best. how many people are left, do you think, that haven t followed the warning to get out? we re not sure. that is a hard number to tell. a lot of people are not answering the call.
